7:168
وَقَطَّعْنَٰهُمْفِىٱلْأَرْضِأُمَمًامِّنْهُمُٱلصَّٰلِحُونَوَمِنْهُمْدُونَذَٰلِكَوَبَلَوْنَٰهُمبِٱلْحَسَنَٰتِوَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِلَعَلَّهُمْيَرْجِعُونَ ١٦٨

Saheeh International

And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].

Tafseer 'Ibn Kathir' (AR)

يذكر تعالى أنه فرقهم في الأرض أمما أي طوائف وفرقا كما قال "وقلنا من بعده لبني إسرائيل اسكنوا الأرض فإذا جاء وعد الأخرة جئنا بكم لفيفا" "منهم الصالحون ومنهم دون ذلك" أي فيهم الصالح وغير ذلك كقول الجن "وأنا منا الصالحون ومنا دون ذلك كنا طرائق فددا" "وبلوناهم" أي اختبرناهم "بالحسنات والسيئات" أي بالرخاء والشدة والرغبة والرهبة والعافية والبلاء "لعلهم يرجعون ".
